| Background to the projectBackground information Historically during the 1950’s and 1960’s children who died before, during or immediately after birth would be interred by what is now the University Hospital North Durham (UHND) in unmarked graves in one part of the churchyard at St. Cuthbert’s Church. There is currently no place of focus for relatives of the children to visit, reflect and remember. There are increasing instances of the church being contacted by relatives wishing to know where individual graves are sited. UHND has strong links with St Cuthbert’s Church. The hospital chaplain has conducted an annual memorial service in St Cuthbert’s for many years. As well as having historical resonance perinatal loss is felt to be a current issue given there are around 15 stillbirths per year in County Durham and 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage. The installation of the Baby Memorial will impact positively on those seeking solace following the loss of a child for generations to come. We expect the Baby Memorial will enhance the annual Baby Memorial Service provided via the relationship with the local hospital chaplains. Background to the project Background information |
